To what extent can a logistic growth model accurately describe the spread of COVID-19 during its initial wave in UAE?
۱- Introduction
When the first laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 cases were reported in the United Arab Emirates on 29 January 2020, I became curious whether a very simple mathematical law could still capture the shape of a real outbreak. In class I had learned the logistic curve and I wanted to test, using actual UAE data, how accurate this model could be for the initial wave of COVID-19.
In this project I define the first wave as the period 29 January to 31 July 2020: cumulative cases increased rapidly through spring and then slowed and stabilised by late July (Our World in Data, 2023). The logistic model is a natural first candidate because it needs only three parameters yet it provides direct formulas for the inflection time and the maximum daily growth (Chowell, 2021). Prior studies also show that during the early rising phase, logistic growth can approximate more detailed compartmental models while using far fewer assumptions (Giordano et al., 2020; Mazumder et al., 2020).
However, the logistic curve is symmetric around its inflection point. Many COVID-19 datasets display asymmetric behavior so I will also compare the logistic fit with the Gompertz curve (an asymmetric sigmoid) and with a minimal SEIR-type approximation to understand whether asymmetry materially improves fit (Kwak et al., 2022).
Research question. To what extent can a logistic growth model accurately describe the spread of COVID-19 during its initial wave in the UAE?
Method overview. I will (i) build a cleaned cumulative case series for the above window (Our World in Data, 2023), (ii) estimate (K,r,A)(K,r,A) by non-linear least squares with transparent starting values and convergence checks (Chowell, 2021), and (iii) evaluate accuracy using R2R^2, RMSE, AIC, residual diagnostics, and mathematical sensitivity of N(t)N(t) to small changes in KK and rr. For fairness, the same workflow is applied to Gompertz and to the SEIR-proxy. By keeping the focus on mathematics and computation, this IA aims to give a careful, quantitative answer to the question above, and to clarify when a simple logistic law is “good enough” and when an asymmetric alternative is justified (Kwak et al., 2022; Mazumder et al., 2020).
