The Impact of Modified Biochar on Sludge Dewatering Performance: A Systematic Review
Abstract
Dewatering sludge remains one of the most crucial challenges in wastewater treatment, having a big impact on efficiency, cost, and environmental sustainability in sludge management. Most conventional dewatering techniques, including mechanical dewatering and chemical conditioning using synthetic polymers, generally have high operational costs, energy consumption, and environmental issues like microplastic pollution. Recent biochar-based developments on sludge dewatering have presented great potentials toward a sustainable substitution for conventional technologies. It comprehensively reviews the role of modified biochar to improve sludge dewatering performance, discussing the mechanism investigation, optimization strategy, and comparison of different modification techniques of biochar. Adsorption, electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic surface modification, and flocculation enhancement are the key mechanisms of sludge dewatering improvement by means of biochar, reducing the capillary suction time and increasing sludge cake dryness. Among the acid activation, metal doping, thermal treatment, and nano-functionalization methods for the modification of biochars, comparative analysis revealed that multi-modified biochar exhibits superior performance due to tailored physicochemical properties. It further compares the review of biochar-based dewatering with conventional methods and illustrates that biochar is capable of reducing polymer dependency by up to 50% while sustaining high dewatering efficiency. Economic feasibility and sustainability considerations showed that the management cost of biochar-treated sludge is lower due to reduced sludge volumes for land disposal and/or higher quality sludge for beneficial reuse. However, challenges such as high modification cost, scalability, and regulatory uncertainties exist that could limit large-scale applications. Future research should be directed at low-cost biochar production, long-term performance studies, and hybrid biochar modifications to further optimize efficiency. This review thus provides important insights into how biochar-based dewatering can be considered cost-effective, eco-friendly, and highly efficient compared to conventional methods of sludge treatment while moving toward sustainability in wastewater management.
